Episode 17: Purgatory (1999) & The Long Ride Home (2003) (/w Rob Trench)

Consarn it, it’s Eric Roberts is the Man 17 and this dadburn episode features two classic, timeless WESTERNS featuring – you guessed it – ERIC ROBERTS! To avoid being dumfungled, we’re joined by writer and podcaster ROB TRENCH, who delights and entertains us as we look at the made-for-TNT supernatural western PURGATORY – with an all-star cast including SAM SHEPARD, RANDY QUAID, DONNIE “Donnie Don” WAHLBERG and ERIC ROBERTS. If that wasn’t enough star power, we follow it up with 2003’s THE LONG RIDE HOME starring RANDY TRAVIS as a mustachioed outlaw who is being hunted down by ERNEST BORGNINE. Also, ERIC ROBERTS is there! YEE-HAW!

As always, check out ERIC ROBERTS IS THE MAN on Twitter, or come chat ER (or anything else) on our Facebook group.

On this week’s ROBERTS REPORT we discussed:

With a new year comes plenty of new Eric Roberts news, starting with the enthusiastic response to the Lifetime movie STALKED BY MY DOCTOR which was airing regularly over the holidays. I’ve yet to see it, but I’ve been told by multiple sources that it features a delightfully unhinged Eric Roberts performance – and those are my favorite kind!

We’ll be fast-tracking that one onto the podcast, so look for it soon.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that both the ERITFM Twitter account and my own personal account was recently followed by the lovely and talented Eliza Roberts – wife and manager to Eric Roberts. I rather jokingly mentioned that I’m in the process of collecting the whole set of the Roberts family on social media. Yes. Joking.

Eric Roberts: I don’t know. IMDb tracks that for me. When I wonder what I’m doing, I go to IMDb and they tell me, or I go to my wife. I don’t really know what I have out there that’s still in the can because I’m always working, so I don’t keep track of what’s where.

Finally on this week’s Roberts Report..

Recently added to the ever-expanding Eric Roberts IMDB page is 2016’s THE SUMMONING directed by Alberto G. Rodriguez, who also directed the – topical – Western zombie film THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE DEAD a few years back.

The IMDB plot summary says:

A law student, working on a century’s old murder case, discovers more than what she expected when spirits from the past begin to visit her, leading her towards an insidious truth that will place her own life in danger.
